Situated in the beautiful eastern Free State of South Africa.


Memel (South Africa) is situated in the north eastern Freestate about 20km from the Kwa Zulu Natal border. Travelling by road along the R34, between Vrede and Newcastle, you will find Memel at an altitude of about 1800m above sea level.  Memel lies approximately 350km from Durban and about 280 km from Johannesburg.

Climate & Temperatures

Memel has cool summers, with winters becoming cold. The town lies on the plateau of the Drakensberg and therefore has a Highveld climate.

Most of the rainfall received in the area occurs during the summer months. The average rainfall received in the area is around 750mm. Hail is not uncommon for the area in summer. Snow may fall during the cold winter months and 2011 produced two snowfalls.

Day temperatures in summer vary between 14-24 degrees Celsius. Winter night time temperatures may drop as low as -4.6 degrees Celsius.

First South African Commercial Aircraft Disaster

A significant happening in the area was the first South African commercial aircraft disaster. 

A farm 37 kms outside Memel has the rather dubious distinction of having been the site of this incident that occurred on the 15th May 1948.
